Established in 1958, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation is headquartered in Potsdam, eastern Germany. It runs liberal programmes in 62 countries, bringing hope, positive changes, and new-found freedoms to millions of people around the world.

International Work

Working to create a freer, liberal and democratic world has always been the goal and commitment of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in all of its international programmes. The Foundation promotes and supports activities that contribute to the strengthening of liberal democracy, respect for human rights, free-market economy, and rule of law so that more and more people can live together peacefully in a freer, liberal and democratic society.

Regional Operations

The FNF has six regional offices in Bulgaria, Egypt, India, Mexico, South Africa, and Thailand.

Regional Office Southeast and East Europe in Sofia, Bulgaria

This regional office invests much of its resources largely on activities and programmes to promote liberal values, democratic practices and political decentralisation in Bosnia, Chez Republic, Georgia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and 20 other countries in the region.

Established in the early 90’s, this regional office founded "Liberal Clubs" in Russia and Hungary and organised an annual conference called the "Liberal Roundtables," which is attended by various members of the local administrations, economists, social activists and the media.

Regional Office Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa

Opened in 1992, the South African office has been involved in a wide variety of liberal programmes with project offices in Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

It cooperates with partner organisations, especially the Democratic Alliance and its affiliated organisations, in promoting a liberal and democratic civil society, in providing a forum for policy makers, academics and activists to discuss matters of national and regional interest, and in building capacity for public and private entities to strengthen liberal and parliamentary democracy in their respective countries.

Regional Office Mediterranean Countries in Cairo, Egypt

The Cairo office has been involved in several national movements for liberal democracy, civil liberty and respect for rule of law in the Mediterranean countries since late 70’s. It runs programmes, meetings, regional conferences and workshops in Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Syria and Turkey.

It works with the European Union, local government agencies and partner NGOs to help bring about peaceful democratic changes and to educate the public about political participation, liberal approaches and civil rights.

The FNF began running activities in Latin America in the late 70’s, years before it set up an office in this region. The Mexico City office now runs projects in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. It set up a network of liberal organisations and individuals to promote liberal democracy, open-market policies, people’s participation in politics, and anti-corruption practice in Latin American countries.

This liberal network, called “Relial” in Spanish, now has links with 31 organisations in 12 countries. Relial has its own homepage www.relial.org and has established itself as one of the most respected websites that promote liberalism in Latin America.

The South Asian office works with a number of partner organisations, including the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) in promoting free trade and economic integration within the region.

It runs projects in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to help strengthen liberal democratic structures, to promote respect for human rights, and to support economic reform aimed at facilitating international trade and giving individual citizens more freedom.

The Bangkok-based regional office has worked with partner organisations in the region to strengthen human rights protection, encourage public participation in politics, promote democratic freedom, and support structural reform with a view to creating a freer and fairer economic and political environment.

To facilitate achievement of those objectives, it joined partner organisations in setting up the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), the Regional Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism (RWG),  and the Economic Freedom Network of Asia (EFN Asia). It has project offices in Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Korea although it also runs activities in several other countries in the region.
