Indonesia: Electoral threshold discussion |

A hot debate is going on in political circles of Jakarta. What arouses so much concern is the question what should be the threshold for parties to obtain seats in Parliament. Currently, this threshold lies at 2.5% but there are suggestions to set it much higher. Opinions in this matter are divided between parties that have obtained a big enough share of votes, and those parties which obtained fewer votes in the last parliamentary elections 2009. Large parties, like the Democrat Party, Golkar, or PDI-P, want to raise the threshold to 5% which is viewed by smaller parties as a move by the heavyweights to prepare for the next elections in 2014.

“In my trip during the fasting month Ramadhan from one place to another throughout Indonesia, I have been greeted and hosted by all members of different communities: the Hindu community provided water during my event in East Java, the Buddhist and Catholics community in Wonosobo joined hands in contributing rice for the fasting-breaking dinner. What I want to say is, we are all Indonesians, and difference is the essence of our being as a nation, but in that difference we are united.”
